The Ministry of Health (Minsa), in coordination with the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), will immunize the vulnerable population in prisons throughout the country to protect people from vaccine-preventable diseases, the health sector reported on Wednesday.
"Healthcare is a universal good that does not discriminate, it is a right. We will reach all prisons across the country through the Directorates of Integrated Health Networks (Diris), the Regional Health Management (Geresa) Offices and the Regional Health Directorates (Diresa) all over the country so as to deliver health —mainly vaccination— services to the vulnerable population," she highlighted.
The government official remarked that the sector will complete the
national vaccination scheme for children under the age of 3 living in prisons with their mothers.
Additionally, they will undergo triage, medical check-ups, and anemia screenings.
According to the government official, pregnant women will be vaccinated against DTaP, and adults over 60 years will be immunized against influenza and pneumococcus in order to protect them from low temperatures.
Remarks were made as she visited the women's prison in Lima's Chorrillos district (formerly known as Santa Monica).
