Peru: Mines Min announces creation of management committees to prevent social conflicts

17:36 | Lima, Aug. 10.

Energy and Mines Minister Luis Miguel Inchaustegui indicated that his sector will address social conflicts under a preventive approach, which is aimed at timely meeting demands and solving the concerns of communities based in the surrounding areas of the energy and mining sector's projects.

In this sense, the high-ranking official announced that he will reinforce his portfolio's General Office of Social Management and create management committees in regions —where mining and hydrocarbon activities are carried out— to enhance dialogue and coordination.

Inchaustegui pointed out that the Government promotes a virtuous circle so that the sustainable use of mineral resources leads to closing gaps.

"We want mining and energy projects to move forward. There can't be economic development without a healthy society," he said in remarks to Canal N.

The Cabinet member also indicated that —as the Ministry's head— he will fulfill the third axis of the Government's general policy that promotes equitable, competitive and sustainable economic growth "through mining (projects), renewable energies and natural gas massification."

Minister Inchaustegui also recalled that there are 48 mining projects which rely on an approved environmental impact study and that only six of them registered social conflicts.

In this sense, he indicated that a greater development of investments will be sought in a sector that is very important for the country.
