Peru: Law enforcement agencies capture four suspected terrorists

The Joint Command of the Armed Forces on Monday reported that the combined efforts of the Special Command VRAEM (CE VRAEM), Peruvian National Police's Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DIRIN), and anti-terrorism squad (DIRCOTE) led to the capture of four suspected terrorists in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro (VRAEM) Rivers.

According to a statement, approved by the Ministries of Defense and Interior, the arrest of the alleged terrorists occurred in the morning of January 26, as part of an operations plan titled "Cleaning of the Valley 2020" that law enforcement agents executed in the VRAEM area.

The Joint Command said the alleged terrorists Walter Chimayco Quispe and Alfredo Limachi Cardenas were captured in the Vizcatan district of the Ene, while Hugo Efrain Quispe Caguin was caught in Huamanga, and Fermin Pacheco Lazo was detained in Pichari.

According to the Joint Command, all detainees belong to the Shining Path terrorist organization's support bases.

It also affirmed that detainees Chimayco Quispe and Limachi Cardenas were transferred to Pichari and handed over to the Peruvian National Police. 

For their part, the naval and air members of CE VRAEM are engaged in operations to transfer the remaining detainees to Pichari and then to Lima to be put at the disposal of the corresponding authorities.

Finally, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces reiterated the commitment assumed by the Peruvian State through a firm and offensive strategy in the fight against remnants of the terrorist organization known as Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path).
