The face of Lady of Ampato, popularly known as Mummy Juanita, will be reconstructed using 3D scanning technology after 23 years of her discovery.
The announcement was made by
Arequipa-based Santa Maria Catholic University's (UCSM) Andean Sanctuaries Museum Director Ruddy Perea.
According to him, the scientific project started last year and is being carried out by Andrew Wilson, a forensic medicine expert at the University of Bradford in the UK, with which the UCSM inked an agreement to implement the project.
A photogrammetry software —a tool for design and superimposition of images— will be used to obtain Mummy Juanita's face.
The subsequent analysis of tooth morphometry and mouth structures will indicate her anthropological features.
This technique will reveal Juanita's height, age, and additional important information, thus providing details to rebuild her face.
The body of this 12- or 14-year-old girl was found at the summit of Ampato Volcano at a height of over 6,800 m.a.s.l. back in 1995.
