Peru: Judge to withdraw from Keiko Fujimori case

14:16 | Lima, Feb. 15.

Peruvian Judge Elizabeth Arias Quispe will remove herself from the investigations into contributions made to Keiko Fujimori's 2011 presidential campaign.

Among the arguments that she adduces, Arias notes the fact that she was previously represented by Allem Rodas Tenorio, current attorney of Jorge Yoshiyama, who is also under probe

In November 2018, Jorge Yoshiyama Sasaki confessed his uncle —former Minister Jaime Yoshiyama Tanaka— had given him large sums of money in order to make fake contributions to Fuerza 2011 (now Fuerza Popular) for Keiko Fujimori's former presidential campaign.

Furthermore, Arias pointed out her appointment as the judge in charge of the said case could raise doubts about her impartiality, which could hinder the development of the process and tarnish the image of the justice administration.

It should be noted Giuliana Loza, Keiko Fujimori's lawyer, had requested the removal of Judge Arias from the case, as she had been her attorney in the past.

However, the judge declared said request unfounded.

In January, the Second National Criminal Appeals Chamber declared the recusal against Judge Richard Concepcion Carhuancho was well founded, thus removing him from the probe on Fuerza Popular political party and its leader Keiko Fujimori.

Therefore, Judge Elizabeth Arias was chosen to replace him.
