Hospitals in the rainforest city of Iquitos (Loreto region) have reported an increase of patients with dengue. For instance, the Support Hospital has 10 patients hospitalized, including children and adults, with warning signs of this disease.

The information was confirmed by hospital's executive director, Carlos Coral, who noted that the Iquitos Support Hospital has no beds to admit febrile and critically ill patients.

Coral indicated that if additional cases are identified, patients will be accommodated in the dining room area, where more hospital beds will be made available.

A similar situation has been observed at the Bellavista health center in the district of Nanay, which has 8 dengue-affected patients who are receiving medical attention.

The critical issue is that this center lacks optimal environments and ventilation to treat those with fever. There are three children among those hospitalized, who are under evaluation.

It should be noted that Loreto is one of the regions with the highest numbers of dengue cases in Peru.

According to the Dengue Situation Room of the National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) at the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Loreto reports 427 confirmed cases, with the province of Maynas leading the list with 242 cases.

Accumulated water due to heavy rains reported in Loreto and other regions across the country creates favorable conditions for the appearance of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is responsible for the transmission of dengue and other diseases.

For this reason, it is important to eliminate materials that can favor the accumulation of water, as they serve as breeding grounds for those mosquitoes.
