Peru: International observers highlight electoral board's work in runoff election

15:53 | Lima, Jun. 20.

Preliminary reports from delegations of international election observers —who monitored the presidential runoff election in Peru— have highlighted the transparency and impartiality of the country's electoral bodies, such as the National Elections Board (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).

Such reports were produced by missions from the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations (UNIORE), the Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPPAL), the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), and the Ecuadorian Committee for Human and Trade Union Rights (CEDHUS).

In total, 160 observers from different countries were accredited by the JNE in order to monitor the performance of polling station members, political party representatives, as well as auditors, before, during, and after the election.

The OAS, which deployed the largest number of observers (40 members of 16 nationalities), congratulated the country's electoral authorities in its report, because —once again— they had to perform their duties in a complex environment, marked by the pandemic and political polarization.

The multilateral organization stated that all electoral bodies supported and facilitated access to information, so that foreign observers can access and supervise the post-election work, as they have been doing so far.

For its part, UNIORE highlighted the determination and professionalism of Peruvian electoral bodies.

The Electoral Observatory of COPPPAL noted that the biosafety measures implemented on the election day were ideal.

Meanwhile, the Mercosur Parliament's report stressed the important and prominent role played by the JNE and ONPE in the conduct of the electoral process.

Finally, the CEDHUS highlighted the work carried out by the JNE during the presidential runoff election.
