00:00 | Tambopata (Madre de Dios region), Jul. 6.

Indigenous COVID-19 Command was established in Peru's rainforest region of Madre de Dios, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers has reported.

The initiative is intended to support concerted efforts of indigenous organizations, the Regional Government of Madre de Dios, and the Executive Branch, in order to reduce and mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus among indigenous peoples.

This inter-sectoral working group comprises the Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA), a National Police colonel, the Tambopata Province Mayor, the Chief of the Army, and the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (DIRCETUR).

The Command is also made up of the Tambopata Province Prefect, a Navy admiral, the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER), the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI), and Native Federation of the Madre de Dios River and its Tributaries (FENAMAD).

"The presence of indigenous leaders confirms their readiness to coordinate with the Government, and today we have come to make a responsible commitment," the President of the Council of Ministers Vicente Zeballos said on Sunday.

"We must join forces to develop a different and prosper country with opportunities but, above all, with equity," he expressed.
