Peru: Huanuco marks 479th foundation anniversary

18:01 | Huanuco (Huanuco region), Aug. 15.

Huanuco City on Wednesday celebrated its 479th foundation anniversary with a flag parade and the performance of colorful ancient dances at its Main Square.

The celebrations began early in the morning —at 6 AM— with a 21-gun salute, followed by a Mass and Te Deum service at Huanuco's Cathedral.

After that, at 9 AM, came a special ceremony marking the 479th anniversary of Huanuco's foundation, led by Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra.

During the event, Vizcarra was joined by Transport and Communications Minister Edmer Trujillo, Huanuco Region Governor Ruben Alva, as well as political, military, and religious authorities.

After congratulating the city on its anniversary, the Head of State stressed the work undertaken by his administration along with regional and local authorities seeking progress and well-being of citizens.

"Huanuco is the entry point to the Amazon (rainforest) and should have access to the coast as such. For that reason, we've started to meet the demands by transferring more than S/700 million (around US$212.7 million)," he noted.

Afterwards, the statesman and other authorities led the Huanuco flag parade and hoisting. Peru's national flag was raised as well.

Also, Wednesday festivities included a dazzling parade with dancers representing all Huanuco localities.

Celebratory activities will continue on Thursday with the closing of Expo Huanuco 2018 fair.
