Peru: Hollywood icon Robert De Niro visits Cusco

10:51 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jan. 13.

The U.S. film star Robert De Niro has arrived in Peru's Andean city of Cusco to visit the famed Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

The renowned 75-year-old actor arrived Saturday at 4:15 PM on a private plane from Lima.

A misty rain greeted him upon his arrival at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco.

He got off the plane wearing a military green rain jacket and a gray cap. He was also sheltering under an umbrella.

Right after his landing, the Hollywood star got into a crossover SUV that took him to a hotel in the imperial city.

De Niro is expected to explore the Inca Empire capital's top attractions including Machu Picchu —a must-see when in Peru and one of the new seven wonders of the world.

The acting icon arrived in the middle of the week as part of his first tourist visit to the Andean nation.

On Thursday, he dined at the exclusive Peruvian eatery Central —in Lima— and did not hesitate to pose for a picture with the restaurant's chef and owner Virgilio Martinez.

The celebrity tried Central's tasting menu, which offers a culinary tour of Peru's biodiversity.

The following day, he visited Pedro de Osma Museum located in the capital city's traditional Barranco district.

Career

De Niro is best known for his Oscar-winning roles in The Godfather II and Raging Bull, to name a few.

Other celebrated films include "Taxi Driver," "Once Upon a time in America," "The Untouchables," and "Casino."

He is well-known for his gangster roles and has played conflicting, turbulent characters as well.
