The Ministry of Health (Minsa) —through the General Directorate for Disaster Risk Management and National Defense in Health (Digerd)— has deployed six brigade members and medical equipment to strengthen primary care level services for people affected by COVID-19 in Talara Province (Piura region).

Thanks to the coordination between Minsa and the Luciano Castillo Colona health subregion in Sullana, a team of six professionals —made up of three licensed nurses and three doctors— headed to Talara Province to provide support from May 10 to 24.

The health staff check on patients in a fully equipped 54-square-meter tent that serves as a triage area, where COVID-19 patients can be handled, thus relieving pressure on Talara's health center.

Willington Mendoza, a deputy executive at one of Digerd's units, stated that a team traveled to Talara a few weeks ago to gather first-hand information about the needs of such health center.

According to Mendoza, the need to provide it (the health center) with logistical and human resource support as soon as possible was determined after said visit.

At the national level, the deployment of health professionals and logistics provide permanent support, thus covering more places in order to decentralize the necessary aid in a timely and efficient manner.

Invisible and deadly enemy

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) or the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). These viruses can be transmitted between animals and people.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain that had not been previously identified in humans. It is transmitted from human to human through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. COVID-19 is also transmitted by close contact with people infected by the virus.

People are encouraged to keep a distance from others, wear a face mask or a face shield when using public transportation, wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, among other measures.
