Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti announced that her sector is preparing a progressive reopening of non-COVID-19 healthcare services throughout the country, so that people can be served in other areas safely.

"The primary care level (health posts and centers) is being organized. We are gradually reopening the establishments to vaccinate our children and the elderly or to control anemia in children, among other things," she stated.

Additionally, the sector is reopening healthcare services for patients with chronic diseases —such as diabetes or hypertension— who have not been checked by a doctor for six months or have only received teleconsultation care, due to the health emergency.

Economic reactivation and health

Mazzetti noted that the economic reactivation is what we want and need as a country, but that it will be useless if this process is not implemented pursuant to measures that reduce the possibility of a fresh outbreak of coronavirus.

"It is time to take care of ourselves. There is no point in reactivating the economy if people get sick. The reactivation must go hand in hand with health care for everyone," she said after inaugurating the new Mobile Emergency Care System (SAMU) operations center on Monday in Lima's San Isidro district in the presence of Mayor Augusto Caceres.

The Minsa head underscored that now that we are witnessing a period of relative calm in terms of COVID-19 cases, it is time to strengthen our response capacity to deal with the pandemic.

"From what we have seen overseas, many countries have experienced a decrease in numbers, which resulted in a few weeks of relative calm, and then came an upturn. We have to be prepared for it and learn to live with the coronavirus," she added.
