The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday met with the guild of rice producers and representatives of the National Convention of Peruvian Agro (Conveagro), to whom he expressed his political decision to immediately address their demands in the face of an adverse international situation.

According to the Head of State, the aim is to avoid a rise in prices, which may affect the economy of Peruvian families.

"I have a tight agenda, and more so with the (seismic) event occurred in Amazonas, but I am making a stop because the issues to be discussed are very important," he said during the meeting held at the Government Palace in Lima.

"The Peruvian people eat rice, children eat rice, and rice can be found at every market," he remarked.

The two main proposals of producers were to include chemical fertilizers, such as urea, in the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund; and to make adjustments in the price band for agricultural products such as rice, corn, milk, and sugar.

In this regard, the country's top official offered to provide a rapid coordination with the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), and the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) to make the request of including fertilizers in the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund viable.

In addition, Mr. Castillo announced that he would make arrangements with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) to improve the price band for agricultural products and protect Peruvian farmers, but respecting legal stability.

"(…) we have to assist farmers and rice growers to give them what they deserve," he pointed out.

Within this framework, the President affirmed that his administration is committed to improving the country's infrastructure so as to bring agricultural producers closer to various markets, since the lack of roads affects the competitiveness of farmers.
