Peru: Hay Festival 2019 opens in Arequipa

For the fifth consecutive year, Peru's southern city of Arequipa —known popularly as the "White City"— is hosting Hay Festival: the festival of words.

Locals and visitors are invited to explore this stunning metropolis to join talks on literature, environment, journalism, science, music, among other topics, as part of this 4-day event that kicked off on November 7.


The opening ceremony took place at Mario Vargas Llosa Regional Library. It was open to the media and saw the presence of public figures, and sponsors' representatives.


Some of the authors invited this year include Rosita Charaja, Paolo Cognetti, Daniel Divinsky, Andy Fryers, Emiliano Monge, Juan Manuel Robles, Hallie Rubenhold, Alonso Ruiz-Rosas, Erika Stockholm, Lol Tolhurst, and Edward Wilson-Lee.

"Let's celebrate the fifth anniversary of Hay Festival in Peru, with 2019 being the second year the event (Hay Forum) takes place in Ayacucho and the first time the Hay Forum takes place in Moquegua," said Angela Delgado, Development Director at Hay Festival in Peru.


For his part, Beto Bernal, Chairman of Arequipa's Regional Council, had a look at the broad range of topics to be addressed during the event in Arequipa.


"Hay Festival allows us to get closer to ecology, cinema, feminism (...). In addition, it will address the importance of Quechua language and feature NASA engineer Aracely Quispe as a guest," he stated.

Hay Festival Arequipa 2019 takes place on November 7-10, with prestigious national and international guests, filling the city with culture and leading everyone to imagine the world.
