The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Monday underscored that the Government is promoting turning the Bayovar phosphate mining project into a competitive producer of fertilizers for the domestic market in order to meet the great demand of farmers.

The Head of State affirmed that Bayovar constitutes one of the largest phosphate exploitation deposits in South America, with an annual production forecast of almost 4 million tons of concentrates for export.

In this regard, he pointed out that the crisis caused by the high prices of fertilizers, as a result of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine, should become an opportunity to give such impetus to the non-metallic mining project.

The top official remarked that, through the Ministry of Agriculture (Midagri) —in the context of the Second Agrarian Reform and the Government's General Policy for the 2021-2026 period— the Government has proposed to turn Bayovar into a competitive producer of fertilizers for the domestic market.

He also noted that this would have a positive impact on food production capacity and on national food security, and it could even serve the foreign market.

"Having a fertilizer plant in Peru is a long-awaited project for farmers, and we are already starting. Thus, the country will have its own fertilizer processing plant, taking advantage of the deposits that are available here in Bayovar," Mr. Castillo added in his speech.

The dignitary underlined that this initiative is expected to create 3,000 jobs at the beginning and supply the local demand for fertilizers.

Likewise, he invited the private sector to join forces and get the project off the ground.

His remarks were delivered during his visit to the city of Sechura in Piura region, where he held a meeting with locals.
