The Council of Ministers has approved a bill seeking a supplementary credit of S/2 billion (around US$528.8 million) to finance a food subsidy aimed at the population in a situation of vulnerability due to the rise in food prices.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Anibal Torres on Saturday during a press conference organized by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM).

"The Government works for the poorest, within the framework of food security. We have reached the most remote areas in Peru and identified their needs," he stated.

"In that respect, we have approved a supplementary credit to finance the provision of a food subsidy to cover or mitigate the impact of the increase in food prices in the most vulnerable sectors across the country," the Cabinet chief added.

In this regard, Economy and Finance Minister Oscar Graham said that the State has benefited from higher collection of income tax thanks to the mining activity and of general sales tax due to an increase in the national economic activity, which resulted in a proposal to increase the resources of the current State budget.

Graham explained that this important bill seeks an amount equal to 1% of GDP and is the result of the Government's great effort to mitigate the impacts of food crisis and the rise in fuel prices, which are affecting the whole world.

"Within this framework, and as part of this supplementary credit, S/2 billion (around US$528.8 million) is being allocated to the provision of a food subsidy, which will serve to cover and mitigate the impact of rising food prices among the most vulnerable sectors in Peru," he remarked.

Lease grant

On the other hand, Mr. Torres announced that the Council of Ministers has agreed to grant a lease subsidy of up to S/500 (about US$132) per month to those whose houses have been affected by disasters.
