Peru: Government expresses solidarity, calls Tumbes citizens for calm

The Peruvian Government on Saturday expressed solidarity with the citizens affected by a strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake, whose epicenter was located in Ecuador, and asked citizens on both sides of the border to remain calm.

"Given the strong earthquake that occurred in Tumbes, with its epicenter in Ecuador, we express our solidarity and call on our sisters and brothers on both sides of the border for calm," the Presidency of the Republic posted on its official Twitter account.

Likewise, the Presidential Office reported that it has been coordinating with the corresponding entities to assess the personal and material damage, as well as execute the corresponding immediate actions.


Earthquake


According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), the earthquake occurred at 12:12 p.m. (local time).

The telluric movement was felt with an intensity IV in the Peruvian city of Zarumilla. 

The first reports indicated that there was damage to several homes, as well as public and private premises.

The epicenter of the seismic event was located in Ecuador —85 kilometers northeast of Zarumilla.

The large-magnitude earthquake was also felt in the city of Tumbes and in other areas belonging to this region, in addition to Piura and Lambayeque regions.

Update at 5:04 p.m. (local time): The earthquake has so far left 1 person dead, 29 victims, 73 affected, as well as 5 houses collapsed, 5 uninhabitable, 21 affected, plus 2 affected healthcare centers.
