Peru: Fugitive ex-governor Felix Moreno caught by police

10:17 | Lima, Nov. 12.

National Police of Peru arrested former Callao Region Governor Felix Moreno Monday night in Cieneguilla, Lima.

As confirmed by the Interior Ministry, the detention was made as a result of a patient work of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (Dirincri) within the National Police, in coordination with the General Directorate of Intelligence (Digimin) within the Interior Ministry.

Interior Minister Carlos Moran claimed that Moreno was captured at 11:40 PM along with a woman named Sheila Reyes Vasquez.

According to Moran, the former regional authority had cash in his possession.

Moreno had been a fugitive since January this year, when the Judiciary sentenced him to five years of effective imprisonment.

Authorities had issued an arrest warrant against him for the Corpac case and the undervalued sale of a property in Oquendo Estate.

In addition, he is investigated for allegedly receiving US$2.4 million from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht as a bribe to get the Costa Verde del Callao concession.

This is the second most important capture of a fugitive in less than fifteen days, following that of former lawmaker Edwin Donayre, who was arrested on October 30, after several months as a fugitive.
