Peru, France sign agreement on French language teaching

09:57 | Lima, Aug. 7.

The Governments of Peru and France, through the Ministry of Education and the French Embassy in Peru, respectively, have signed an inter-institutional agreement that will allow students and teachers at High-Performance Schools (COAR) to access online classes in order to learn the French language.

The agreement will benefit 878 students of 3rd grade of secondary and one teacher from each of the 25 schools that make up the COAR network nationwide.

With this, the COAR schools will add French to its foreign language offerings, in addition to English.

The program lasts 5 months and includes 40 hours of classes, online evaluations and access to a virtual library, which will be fully funded by the French Embassy and operated through Alianza Francesa —a cultural institution with nearly 130 years of experience in language teaching.

The signing ceremony took place at the Education Ministry headquarters, located in Lima's San Borja district, in the presence of Minister Martin Benavides and French Ambassador to Peru Antoine Grassin.

The event also featured French Embassy's Advisor for Cooperation and Cultural Action Laetitia Quilichini, Peru's Deputy Pedagogical Management Minister Diana Marchena and the head of the General Directorate of Specialized Education Services (Digese) Paul Gonzales.

"We are fully committed to strengthening the public education system. In this regard, we are making innovations at COAR schools and, through French, we want to give students the opportunity for intercultural training," said Benavides during the ceremony.

For his part, Ambassador Grassin explained that the possibility to start with distance learning was considered given the difficult situation due to the health emergency.
