Peru: Former Callao Superior Court President Walter Rios arrested

11:08 | Lima, Jul. 16.

Former Callao Superior Court President Walter Rios was arrested as part of investigations against him due to audio recordings linking him to alleged acts of corruption, Peru's Public Ministry informed.

The arrest took place at his home on Sunday afternoon.

Issued for 72 hours, the preliminary detention was ordered by Supreme Court Judge Luis Cevallos at the request of Deputy Internal Control Prosecutor Jaime Velarde, who conducts investigations.

Velarde was joined by a police contingent when he arrived at Rios' home —in San Miguel district— to make the arrest.

The police team carried out a raid at the property to seize anything that might serve as evidence in investigations.

Walter Rios is implicated in a series of audio recordings released by Panorama TV show and investigative journalism site IDL—Reporteros.

In the conversations, he is heard negotiating the appointment of magistrates and alleged irregular acts with some National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members.
