Peru: Forest fire at Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu controlled

The forest fire that occurred inside the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu —located in Urubamba Province of Cusco region— has been controlled, and no personal injuries have been reported, but the event has affected 20 hectares of natural cover in the Intihuatana sector, situated on Calvario (Calvary) Hill.



The personnel of Sernanp, the Peruvian National Police and the Ministry of Culture are participating in fire liquidation and monitoring activities at the site. The blaze started on Friday, September 11, at noon.  


The fire brigade was made up of 2 teams from the Ministry of Culture, a 10-member team from the Hydroelectric Power Plant, a 7-member team from the Wiñaywayna sector, as well as 8 members of the Public Safety Corps and 2 from the Machu Picchu Municipality Risk Management Office.

Likewise, the Sernanp team was made up of 7 people, and the National Police squad included 3 officers. 

In addition, EGENSA and Fertransa joined forces to help transporting the personnel.
