Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Lopez affirmed that the United Nations System embodies the possibility for understanding, dialogue, solidarity, and consensus as tools for action and relations among States.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official reiterated the call to deem the COVID-19 vaccine as a global public good.

Likewise, the Cabinet member requested the UN to ensure timely and equitable access to medicines, treatments, and equipment against the pandemic, adding that universal health coverage and the strengthening of the multilateral health architecture cannot be postponed.

The minister reaffirmed Peru's commitment to the fight against corruption, the implementation of the Paris Agreement, peace and security, gender equality, the strengthening of the multilateral trade system, and the principles for a reliable digital environment geared towards achieving sustainable development.

The dignitary also pointed out that —in the face of the challenges faced by multilateralism— the willingness to reach consensus and the "lessons learned help us to shape the future we want, as well as the United Nations that we need for that purpose."

Ambassador Lopez participated in the virtual event on Friday from the Lima-based Torre Tagle Palace, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's headquarters.
