Peru FA Min chairs UN Security Council meeting

12:37 | New York (U.S.), Jul. 19.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio presided over the U.N. Security Council briefing on peacebuilding and sustaining peace: "Strengthening Partnerships for Successful Nationally-owned Transitions" in New York (United States).

Held on Thursday, July 18, the event reaffirmed the close relationship between peace and development, as well as the promotion of human rights.

Popolizio underscored the need to bestow national institutions with the means to prevent and resolve conflicts, generate national consensus around good governance, ensure that the needs of the population —including the most vulnerable— are met, as well as fight impunity and corruption.

Likewise, participants agreed on the crucial importance of women and youth's effective involvement in these efforts.

The session underlined the importance of creating synergy with the international community, as well as regional and sub-regional organizations, in order to provide the necessary financial resources for these goals.

Therefore, World Bank and African Development Bank representatives were invited this time.

Peru —non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2018-2019 period— assumed the presidency again during the first half of 2019
