The Government of Peru, through the Foreign Affairs Ministry, has expressed its deepest condolences to the Government of the People's Republic of China on the death of former leader Jiang Zemin.

The government agency indicated that Jiang Zemin had strengthened the friendship and cooperation between Peru and China during his term in office.

"Former President Jiang Zemin will be remembered for his permanent willingness to strengthen friendship and cooperation between Peru and the People's Republic of China," the government agency indicated.

According to official news agency Xinhua, the former leader of China passed away at age 96 due to leukemia and multiple organ failure.

He had served as general secretary of the party (1989-2002) and as Head of State (1993-2003), continuing the reform and opening policies initiated by Deng Xiaoping.

China, with Jiang as its main leader, successfully reintegrated into the international community by regaining sovereignty over Hong Kong, winning the candidacy to host the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and joining the World Trade Organization.
