Peru: EsSalud triples rapid response capacity at homes in Apurimac region

09:00 | Abancay (Apurimac region), Jan. 26.

In the face of the second wave of COVID-19, the Apurimac Healthcare Network of the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) has strengthened the home medical care service by adding two doctors, two nurses, three aid vehicles, and an ambulance that provides 24-hour emergency care.

It must be noted that most of the staff speak Quechua, a native language spoken in Peru.

In the first two days of this implementation, rapid response teams conducted 150 home visits within the jurisdiction belonging to Hospital No. II of Abancay and transferred two patients to the in-patient unit of the Pan American Village.

Apurimac Healthcare Network Director David Orihuela explained that rapid response teams —provided with personal protective equipment— conduct home visits from Monday to Sunday, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Therefore, if insured people have COVID-19 symptoms or had direct contact with an infected person and want a rapid response team to visit their home, they can call 083-595000 and 083-585555 to schedule a visit.

According to Christian Vela, general coordinator of rapid response and clinical follow-up teams, those who request a visit, as well as their entire family, will be examined during the face-to-face medical follow-up.

Additionally, as part of the visit, medicines will be provided according to the diagnosis.

EsSalud indicated that most of the health workers of rapid response teams speak Quechua and, if required, they can treat patients in this native language.
