The
Ministry of Environment (Minam) has issued a statement reporting on the actions taken by the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA) and the National Service for Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp) after the oil spill that occurred in Lima's Ventanilla district.

The Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA):
-The environmental supervision initiated on Sunday, January 16, which identified and assessed the zones affected by the hydrocarbon spill.
-As a consequence of said supervisory action, the OEFA has taken administrative actions against Repsol Peru aimed at: i) identifying and cleaning up the areas affected by the spill, ii) containing and recovering the hydrocarbon, iii) safely transporting and disposing of hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated from spill cleanup.
- Each measure imposed by the OEFA to Repsol Peru shall be implemented within the following deadlines: i) Up to 10 calendar days to clean up the areas affected by hydrocarbons, ii) up to 5 calendar days to contain and recover the hydrocarbons, and iii) up to 8 days to safely dispose of the waste generated from spill cleanup.
- It is imperative that the company complies with the measures to contain and recover the spilled hydrocarbons so as to prevent their expansion into the sea, as well as to carry out urgent cleanup measures in the affected areas.
- It should be noted that non-compliance with the administrative measures will result in the imposition of coercive fines of up to 100 tax units (UIT), which will be imposed successively until the company reaches compliance. These coercive fines are independent of those fines that may be imposed by the OEFA within the framework of an administrative sanctioning procedure.
The National Service for Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp):
- The identification of two protected natural areas that have been affected: the Guano Islands, Islets, and Capes National Reserve System and the Ancon Reserved Zone. A first Sernanp report shows that about 512 hectares in the area of the Grupo de Pescadores (Fishermen's Group) Islands of the Guano Islands, Islets and Capes National Reserve have been affected.
- Sernanp park rangers are carrying out actions to clean up hydrocarbons in the area of said protected natural areas, as well as rescue and cleanup of the different species in the marine ecosystem, which have been affected by the hydrocarbon spill; among other measures.
