Peru: Election board allows dissolved-Congress members to run for re-election

18:00 | Lima, Nov. 11.

At a plenary session, the National Election Board (JNE) on Monday agreed —by majority— that dissolved-Congress members are allowed to run in the parliamentary elections scheduled for January 26, 2020.

The decision considered that the rule established in Article 90-A of the Constitution cannot be applied to this electoral process due to its "extraordinary nature."

According to JNE, the agreement adopted is the outcome of a broad and deep debate, in which the scope of constitutional regulations and electoral legislation was technically reviewed.

The resolution will be published on the institutional website and notified to the Special Electoral Jury of Ica, which last Thursday made the consultation on this issue.

In addition, it will be communicated to the other Special Electoral Juries.

The Special Electoral Juries must consider this when assessing the requests for the registration of candidate lists, whose deadline for submission by political parties expires on November 18, according to the electoral schedule.

The JNE plenary session is a plural body composed of representatives from various jurisdictional and academic instances.
