Peru: Economy registered second-smallest drop among region's countries last August

11:24 | Lima, Oct. 26.

The Central Reserve Bank (BCR) on Monday affirmed that Peru's economic activity registered the second-smallest drop among the main countries in the region.

Based on information as of August, the nation recorded a contraction of 9.8%, after Brazil (-3.9%).

"This occurs in a context, in which various economic activities continued to resume operations within the framework of the Economic Reactivation's Phase 3, which had begun on July 1," it said.

The BCR indicated that —since last July— Peru ceased to be the nation with the greatest contraction in the region, as Argentina registered the greatest decline during that month.

"In August, the countries whose economic activities fell the most were Argentina (-11.6%), Chile (-11.3%), and Colombia (-10.6%)," it reported.

The issuing entity said that —compared to other nations in the region— the impact of COVID-19 on the economy was the most severe in Peru thru June due to the duration of the quarantine.
