The Ministry of Defense on Thursday commemorated the 201st anniversary of the First National Flag created by General Jose de San Martin.

"Today, we commemorate the creation of the First National Flag devised by Mr. Jose de San Martin for the nascent Republic of Peru. Red and white are symbols of our identity and national pride. Long live Peru!" a message on Twitter reads.

The First National Flag of Peru was created by decree on a day like today, in 1820, by General Jose de San Martin. The banner layout was divided by two white diagonal lines at the top and bottom, as well as two red lines on the sides.

According to a story by Peruvian writer Abraham Valdelomar, the Argentine-born general was inspired by parihuana —a variety of flamenco native to Peru which stands out for its large reddish wings and white breast— to design this flag.
