The Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco resumed its aeronautical operations on Wednesday morning, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) has reported.

Via social media, the MTC indicated that actions are being undertaken in coordination with the National Police and the Armed Forces to safeguard the integrity of passengers and aeronautical community members.

On Tuesday afternoon, Cusco Airport had suspended its operations as a preventive measure in the face of social protests in Cusco and potential attacks at said air terminal.

The measure adopted by the MTC was intended to safeguard the integrity of passengers and airport employees, as well as the safety of aeronautical operations.

The airport had resumed its aeronautical operations on January 20, after being closed due to security measures against possible attacks by vandals.

Between December 2022 and January 2023, the Velasco Astete Airport had to suspend its operations several times after threats and subsequent attacks perpetrated by violent groups.

Demonstrations continue in Cusco. Moreover, roads and the railway line from Cusco to Machu Picchu —Peru's main tourist attraction— remain blocked, which forced authorities to indefinitely suspend visits to the Inca citadel.
