Peru: COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase in Ancash region's coastal area

13:10 | Chimbote (Ancash region), Jan. 5.

The number of patients diagnosed with the new coronavirus (COVID-19), who require hospitalization, continues to increase in the coastal zone of Ancash region, according to reports issued by hospitals in the last two weeks.

Concerning Eleazar Guzman Barron Regional Hospital —a COVID-19 reference center in Nuevo Chimbote— a 23% contagion increase was reported in the hospitalization area.

The hospital's Deputy Director Martin Alva on Tuesday pointed out that this increase started to be observed on December 22, 2020.

In such period, 42 new patients infected with COVID-19 have entered the temporary module —eight (8) of them are in the ICU, 10 have been discharged, and other seven (7) have unfortunately died.

At the Third Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) Hospital in the port city of Chimbote, COVID-19-related hospitalizations have tripled in merely five days. Thus, 60 people are in such condition as of today, Ancash region-based EsSalud Manager Ramon De La Cruz indicated.

"Until five days ago, there were 20 hospitalized patients, but the figure has tripled now," he said.

In both hospitals, all Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds are already occupied.

According to the latest COVID-19 Situation Room Report in Ancash, 44,432 infected people were registered since the beginning of the pandemic, of whom 41,068 have managed to defeat the disease, but —sadly— 1,874 have died.
