Peru: Cateriano calls for national unity after Cabinet fails confidence vote

11:28 | Lima, Aug. 5.

Pedro Cateriano —whose Ministerial Cabinet did not receive a confidence vote from legislators— on Wednesday called for national unity and for changing legitimate interests that political parties may have.

"Let's support the Government of President Vizcarra regardless of the natural political differences," he said.

Moving forward amid this difficult situation poses a challenge not only to the Head of State, and implies a national effort that, he hopes, will be coordinated within the framework of the National Agreement and the Peru Pact.

Cateriano said he is confident that President Martin Vizcarra will choose the right person for the post of Prime Minister, adding that he has had to face crises on both the political and health care fronts.

"Hopefully, the next President of the Council of Ministers will receive the confidence vote. It is absolutely urgent and necessary to restore political calm," Cateriano said in remarks to RPP radio and TV station.
