Peru burns over 66 tons of seized drugs in 2018

18:47 | Lima, Dec. 12.

The Committee for the Destruction of Drugs Seized in Illicit Traffic has burned over 66 tons of drugs so far this year, surpassing the goal of 37.1 tons for 2018, Interior Ministry (Mininter) informed on Wednesday.

During the fourth incineration session of the year —which saw over 15 tons destroyed— Deputy Domestic Order Minister Esteban Saavedra noted the action rewards the efforts of Mininter and the Government in the daily fight against drug-trafficking

Likewise, the official asserted the authorities responsible for this combat will always go after criminal organizations affecting the society.

The 15 tons included cocaine hydrochloride, paste, marijuana, and ecstasy. The drugs were confiscated by Peruvian National Police (PNP) in numerous operations carried out in diverse zones of the Inca nation.

According to Organized Crime Directorate (DGCO), 8.9 tons were burned in the first session —back in January— 20.2 tons in the second, and 22 tons in the third.

"The annual average of seized drugs was 30 tons. In the last two years, we have doubled that figure thanks to the intense work done by high-performance teams and the Government's support," National Anti-Drug Agency (Dirandro) Head Hector Loayza said.
