Holy Week–related activities have started in Andean Ayacucho region, and more than 50,000 tourists are expected to join the festivities marking one of the largest religious celebrations in the world.

According to Ayacucho Chamber of Commerce (CCL) Chairman Federico Vargas, this region becomes a magnet for tourists on these days, due to the religious, traditional, cultural, and tourist activities it has to offer.

"The economic impact generated in Ayacucho during Holy Week is the most important in the country as it ensures important resources and jobs that total more than S/5 million (around US$1.5 million)," he indicated.

Such impact stimulates the creation of more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs on different fields and boosts the consumption of different products and services.

Thousands of visitors

For her part, Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) Head Maria Palomino estimates that over 50,000 domestic and foreign tourists will visit the place.

This figure includes Ayacucho-born individuals living in other parts of Peru who return year after year to take part in the celebrations.

Additionally, Palomino affirmed domestic consumption will be key for local trade.

Hotel capacity

In order to meet the demand for lodging services, over 10,000 beds will be available for guests at hotels and other accommodation options.

Palomino stressed the importance of Ayacucho's craft industry —another tourist attraction— as there are several shops located in Santa Ana neighborhood.
