Peru: Avocado exports totaled US$754 million in Jan-Sep 2020

12:20 | Lima, Nov. 22.

Peru's agro-exports were mainly driven by sales of avocados —the sector's leading product— which amounted to US$754 million between January and September this year, Peruvian Foreign Trade Society (Comex-Peru) has reported.

According to the association, this amount represents a 0.5%. increase as compared with the corresponding one from a year earlier.

The value of shipments accounted for about 17% of Peru's total agro-exports in January-September.

The main destinations for Peruvian avocados were the Netherlands (US$251 million), Spain (US$164 million), the United Kingdom (US$62 million), and Russia (US$19 million).

Furthermore, important shipments were sent to China (US$25 million) and Japan (US$21 million).

In terms of volume, the sector exported 405,252 tons of avocado during the period of analysis, 30.9% more than in the same period last year.

This important rise, however, was not reflected in a sharp increase in the value of avocado exports, due to the decline in the price of such product.

"The lower export price may be explained by the oversupply in international markets," Comex Peru added.
