Peru: Armed Forces to be deployed in areas with highest incidence of family reunions

Armed Forces members will be deployed in areas where a higher incidence of family reunions has been detected, and they will support the National Police in reinforcing measures to contain the COVID-19 contagion, Defense Minister Jorge Chavez reported on Thursday.

The high-ranking official specified that —when the quarantine was lifted in the city of Lima last June— the Armed Forces took up duties in support of the Tayta Operation throughout the country to help detect infected citizens, treat them and guarantee their social isolation.

Now, given the new provisions decreed by the Government, "the Armed Forces will be seen during the curfew, particularly in areas where the highest incidence of family reunions, such as 15-year-old parties or crowds, has been detected."

The Cabinet member noted that the presence will not be stationary, but will be aimed at complying with the restrictions established by the Government, such as the extension of the emergency focused on several provinces and nationwide social immobilization (curfew) on Sundays.

In this sense, the minister called on the population to reflect on that because irresponsible attitudes threaten the lives and health of their relatives and neighbors.

"We respectfully exhort them (to obey the measures), and we are also going to be firm in complying with the provisions," he said in remarks to America Television.

Chavez argued that

—according to information from the Ministry of Health— the highest proportion of infections occur at family reunions, so it was decided to decree social immobilization on Sundays.
