Peru among top five Latin America's most travel and tourism competitive countries

Peru is the 5th most travel and tourism competitive nation in Latin America, according to the 2019 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report, published by the World Economic Forum.

Over the past four years, the Inca country has moved up nine places in the global ranking (from 58th to 49th), thanks to higher scores in pillars like tourist service infrastructure (up 14 places in the last two years) and price competitiveness (getting a score of 5.3, with 7 being the highest score).

"Peru has managed to become one of the five most travel and tourism competitive destinations among 20 Latin American countries, thus significantly improving on a global scale in the last years," Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) Chairman Luis Torres said.

"These results demonstrate that our country continues to be a tourist destination with strong international appeal and that it works day after day to provide foreign visitors with the best travel experience."

It must be noted the World Economic Forum measured the level of tourism service infrastructure through the number of hotel rooms complemented by the extent of access to services such as car rentals and ATMs.

As for the price competitive pillar, Peru was recognized as the most improved country in the Americas, as it adapted its tourist supply to reduce costs, which raised the interest of many travelers.

Among the aspects of price competitiveness taken into account in this pillar are airline ticket taxes and airport charges, which can make flight tickets much more expensive; the relative cost of hotel accommodation; the cost of living, proxied by purchasing power parity; and fuel price costs, which directly influence the cost of travel.

Throughout this year, PromPeru will continue its efforts to improve the image of the South American country at national and international levels, by promoting its exportable supply and reputation as tourist, cultural, and natural destination among Peruvians and foreigners.
