Peru: 49 women will serve in new Congress

Forty-nine women will serve in Parliament for the next five-year term that will begin on July 2021, according to statistics from the National Elections Board (JNE).

This is the largest number of women serving in Congress, compared to their participation in parliaments over the last 20 years.

Precisely on Wednesday, the plenary session of the National Election Board (JNE) issued credentials to the 130 legislators elected during the 2021 general elections.

The political groups with the highest number of female representatives in Congress are Fuerza Popular and Peru Libre, with 11 women each. They are followed by Alianza para el Progreso, with 8 female representatives.

Accion Popular, Avanza Pais, and Renovacion Popular are each represented by four women lawmakers, while Juntos por el Peru by three. 

In turn, Partido Morado has two congresswomen, whereas Podemos Peru and Somos Peru are each represented by one woman.
