Some 104,000 people with comorbidities and high-risk conditions have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Peru during the pandemic, Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra has reported.

Of this total, 32,000 people suffer from rare diseases, 12,800 have Down syndrome, 12,700 are chronic kidney patients, and 7,400 are pregnant women.

In addition, more than 2,000 people are awaiting or have undergone an organ transplant, while over 37,000 people have mental and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The government official highlighted the speed with which the vaccination process is proceeding, adding that the Ministry of Health (Minsa) is able to maintain the COVID-19 vaccination rate of 200,000 doses per day, in coordination with regional health directorates.

The vaccination process has sped up and, to date, more than 2,500,000 people have received the two doses against COVID-19. In addition, over 6 million doses were administered on Friday, June 18.

People aged 50 and over

In this context, Neyra confirmed that the vaccination of people aged 50 and above —which was originally slated for July— will start on Friday, June 25.

"The date has been brought forward since the vaccination pace has increased," throughout the country, he said, adding that this new age group will be immunized gradually, starting with people aged 58 and 59. "This is very good news," he emphasized.

However, the minister noted that, despite the positive evolution of vaccination and epidemiological indicators, "it remains necessary to remember that the pandemic continues, and it is essential to adhere to (biosafety) measures" to avoid COVID-19 transmission.

His remarks were made at a press conference, joined by Transportation and Communications Minister Eduardo Gonzalez.
