Other four laboratories to conduct COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials in Peru

Four international laboratories —which are developing vaccines against COVID-19— get ready to start their clinical trials in Peru, thus adding to the studies already carried out by China's Sinopharm, Immunization Advisor at the Health Ministry (Minsa) Carlos Castillo reported on Thursday.

The arrival of international laboratory researchers will allow Peru to rely on greater assurance that the vaccine will work for its population, he said.

According to the official, the country —at the same time— has a system which guarantees the safety of clinical trials.

Castillo added that an Ethics Committee has been formed at Minsa, which approves and monitors the tests, while the General Directorate for Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (Digemid) ensures quality and safety, and the National Health Institute (INS) works on the corresponding administrative affairs.

Likewise, he said the objective is for Peru and the world to have safe, effective, and high-quality vaccines.

As is known, Chinese company Sinopharm began its trials at the beginning of September, for which it enrolled 6,000 volunteers, some of whom have already been inoculated with a vaccine.

The next laboratory to start clinical trials will be AstraZeneca —an Anglo-Swedish alliance that plans to do so in the first week of October.

Johnson & Johnson (U.S.) also plans to do the same at the beginning of next month, not only in Lima, but also in Loreto and Callao regions.

German laboratory CureVac is expected to start its clinical trials in Lima in November.

For its part, the Imperial College of the United Kingdom plans to carry out its tests in Lima and Moquegua from January 2021.

Lastly, Castillo indicated that other laboratories could join this list in the coming days.
