The Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday confirmed that Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Luis Almagro will pay a working visit to Peru from November 30 to December 1.

This visit —in response to an invitation made by the Peruvian Government— aims to promote a democratic governance agenda, the fight against corruption and in favor of peoples' rights.

Likewise, it seeks to strengthen the hemispheric multilateral institutional framework in order to promote democracy and political stability, giving priority to the social component and equal opportunities.

Furthermore, the certification of the transparency, legality, and impartiality of the 2021 general elections —carried out by the OAS Electoral Observation Mission— will be highlighted.

Schedule

Moreover, he plans to meet with Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua, greet Congress Chairwoman Maria del Carmen Alva, and hold meetings with sectors related to the OAS' work in Peru.

Similarly, a meeting with electoral authorities and their participation in an activity organized by the Diplomatic Academy of Peru has been contemplated.

Last September, President Castillo visited the OAS headquarters in Washington D.C. On that occasion, he met with Secretary General Almagro, who offered him support to consolidate the agenda related to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, improvement of the health system, education, political stability, and fight against corruption.

That time, the President expressed to Almagro his interest in working together in the education field focused on rural areas.

As is known, Peru will host the 52nd General Assembly of the OAS, which will take place in 2022.
