Lima Group deplores election of Venezuela as UN Human Rights Council member

The Lima Group strongly laments that the illegitimate and dictatorial regime of Nicolas Maduro —responsible for very serious violations of human rights— has been elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2020-2022 period.

In this sense, the Governments of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia, and Venezuela (Guaido administration) released a statement on the matter.

"Our countries renew their firm decision to carry out our best efforts to advance, in said Council, the investigation of the systematic violations of human rights in Venezuela, so that those responsible for these criminal acts are held to account," the document reads.

Finally, they reiterate their unwavering commitment to continue promoting, together with the international community, the recovery of democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela.

As is known, Venezuela won a seat at the UN Human Rights Council with 105 votes.

The 193 members of the General Assembly had to choose two countries from Latin America and the Caribbean. The options were Brazil (153 votes), Venezuela, and Costa Rica (96 votes).
