Lima 2019 unveils medals for Pan American and Parapan American Games

The Lima 2019 Organizing Committee and the National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE) on Thursday unveiled the medals that will be handed out to athletes and Para athletes who reach the podium at the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

The SNMPE mining sector has manufactured nearly 5,000 gold, silver, and bronze medals for athletes and Para athletes from all over the continent. They were made of Peruvian metals extracted from domestic mines.
 

The Pan American Games decorations feature sculpted designs of the Twelve-Angled Stone in Cusco, the Kuelap Fortress in Chachapoyas, and the Candelabra geoglyph in Paracas. 


In the case of the Parapan American Games, the design was inspired in the Pachacamac Temple. 

Each medal is 80 millimeters in diameter, 6 millimeters in thickness, and weighs about 320 grams.

Each disc has a base of copper. The gold medals were coated with 24 karat gold, the silver medals are coated in 950 silver, and the bronze medals have a copper exterior.

In total, Lima 2019 and SNMPE will award 4,941 medals: 1,582 gold, 1,582 silver, and 1,777 bronze. 


Of the total figure, 3,028 will be given out at the Pan American Games: 965 gold, 965 silver, and 1,098 bronze. 

While the number of medals to be awarded during the Parapan American Games is 1,913: 617 gold, 617 silver, and 679 bronze.
