U.S. actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio joined the voices that have spoken about the ecological disaster which occurred in Lima's Ventanilla sea area, on the Peruvian coast, due to the spill of 6,000 barrels of oil.

Within this framework, he posted a story on Instagram.

"Drone footage showed black sludge covering Peru's golden beach following an oil spill on January 16 caused by Tonga's volcanic eruption. The sludge, from a discharge ship rocked by unusually high waves, contaminated at least 1.2 miles along the coast and two beaches," he expressed.

The story published by the Messenger of Peace with a special focus on climate change ahead of the 2014 Climate Summit lasts 37 seconds. It has already exceeded 902,000 views since its publication last Thursday.

Leonardo DiCaprio, an Academy Award winner, has been an outspoken advocate for environmental issues throughout much of his career.

In 1998, at the age of 24, DiCaprio established his foundation with the mission of protecting the Earth's last wild places and implementing solutions to build a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world, the United Nations explained.

Through grantmaking, public campaigns, and media projects, he has worked to bring attention and funding to the protection of biodiversity, ocean and forest conservation, and climate change.

In 2021, DiCaprio announced a US$43 million pledge to enact sweeping conservation operations across the Galapagos Islands, with his social media accounts taken over by a wildlife veterinarian and island restoration specialist, according to The Guardian.
