Independence Day holidays to see nearly 1.5 million tourists across Peru

13:39 | Lima, Jul. 18.

Around 1.5 million vacationers will travel across Peru during Independence Day holidays, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez announced on Thursday.

This figure is based on the study "Travel Intention during Independence Day Holidays," prepared by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism through the General Directorate of Research and Studies on Tourism and Crafts.

According to the research, the most visited destinations will be the regions of Lima (18%); La Libertad (10%); Junin and Lambayeque (7% each); Cajamarca, Cusco, Piura, and Arequipa (6% each); among others.

Vasquez emphasized Lima will be the main destination of Peruvian nationals, accounting for 66% of all trips.

"Lima residents will opt for destinations within the region such as Cañete/Lunahuana, Huaral, Huarmey, and Oyon, as well as places in Lambayeque, Ayacucho, Junin, Ancash, and Arequipa regions," he explained.

As for visitors from provinces —who will make up 34% of the tourist flow— they will head to Lima, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Cusco, Piura, and Huanuco.

According to the survey, the main reasons for travel were "visiting relatives and friends" (54%) and "leisure" (45%).

Those who reported leisure as their primary trip purpose said the main reason of such decision was to "go out and spend time with family" (42%), followed by "rest and relax" (23%), and "get to know new places" (15%).

As for travelling groups, 45% of respondents said they will travel with family (parents and children), 20% look for a solo travel experience, 18% would choose to go on a trip with their partner, 11% prefer to spend time with family/friends without children, while 6% would like a family/friend trip with children.

As is known, Peru commemorates its Independence Day on July 28. On this occasion, the long holiday weekend is expected to start on July 26 and run thru July 30.
