IDB: Peru advances in ensuring water and sanitation to leave poverty behind

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has affirmed that in terms of water and sanitation Peru has adequate levels in the urban areas, adding it is making efficient progress in the rural spheres.

Likewise, the institution indicated that these improvements contribute to the State-run Strategy for the Permanent Exit from Poverty.

"Peru is one of the countries that has more advantages in water resources management because it works on that very well. That's why the gap to have an efficient system is very short and it would be covered," said IDB specialist Mauro Nalesso during his participation in the VIII Social Inclusion Week, organized by the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis).

"That is important to solve the problems of access to the water and sanitation services," he added.

The IDB expert on water and sanitation matters considered that Peru has a good opportunity to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, especially in access to a safe source of water, which contributes to gaps reduction.

"Access to water and sanitation services directly impacts the SDGs, because if water coverage is guaranteed, it will help prevent disease problems, among other difficulties that affect a person's ability to emerge economically," he said.

The officer also pointed out it is necessary to manage —through planning more in line with the territory— the sustainable use of water resources for the agriculture and other economic activities that improve the poor population's quality of life.

"It is a fact that without water there is no life. An important element is that, if water and safe sanitation are guaranteed for people on a continuous basis, that can trigger a series of factors that will contribute to the people leaving poverty behind," he concluded.
