Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti on Tuesday reported that an average of 1,200 molecular tests are currently processed in the 46 laboratories existing nationwide in Peru.

"(...) Don't expect the numbers of molecular tests to rise, because we now have less demand," she told reporters.

After explaining that molecular tests are used to diagnose possible COVID-19 cases, the high-ranking official defended the need to use rapid tests to follow up on the evolution of patients hosting the virus for more than one week.

The Cabinet member said the World Health Organization (WHO) will continue supporting Peru with the donation of rapid and molecular tests, and that they are talking about the possible reception of antigen tests.

"People from this second group of volunteers are being interviewed. The informed consent process, the verification of their health status, the taking of samples, and finally the application of the research product are being carried out," she underlined.

"As soon as we have them (the laboratories), we will inform everyone where these second (clinical) trials are going to be carried out," she emphasized.

According to Dr. Mazzetti, the costs of the vaccines that are being developed are not yet known.

"There are vaccines that require refrigeration, there are vaccines composed of one and two doses. This is highly variable and will ultimately depend on what is needed," she concluded.
