The first wave finally reached the Peruvian coast after the tsunami disaster occurred in Japan. It hit coastal area of Talara, in Piura, at 19:50 hours (local time) and was only 20 centimeters high, according to the head of the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation (DHN) of the Peruvian Navy, Javier Gaviola.

He said the second wave from the tsunami struck the shores at 20:08 hours measuring 40 centimeters.

In Paita, the first wave arrived at 20:10 hours and was 15 centimeters high.

"The morphology of the Peruvian coast would have reduced the impact of waves. We hope this trend will continue, so that waves can move with the same intensity into the central area," Gaviola said.
