Economy and Finance Minister Maria Antonieta Alva on Monday affirmed that Peru's macro-economic strengths have been fundamental in supporting the measures and tackling the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The economic plan to respond to the pandemic is one of the most ambitious ones adopted by Peru and was equivalent to around 20% of the gross domestic product (GDP)," the minister said during the forum 'Challenges to contain COVID-19 in Latin America,' held by Harvard CID.

"It (the plan) includes tax and public spending measures, as well as liquidity provision, secured loans, among others," she added.

Alva estimated that the Peruvian economy will go from a 12% contraction this year to a 10% increase in 2021.

Economic measures

"This growth will be underpinned by the implemented economic measures and the resumption of productive activities," she posted on Twitter.

Likewise, the government official noted that the crisis has revealed the need to solve fundamental structural problems affecting the country for decades.

"We should promote policies aimed at closing the main gaps to improve the efficiency of the Government in the provision of public services," she noted.
