10:20 | Lima, May. 22.

Peru reaffirms its commitment to the protection of ecosystems and the species they contain, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Biodiversity Day, which is celebrated on May 22.

In a post on Twitter, the government agency said that Peru is one of the 17 mega-diverse countries in the world, adding that many species of plants and animals are only found in this country.

Moreover, the ministry mentioned that more than a million species in the world have gone extinct due to the indiscriminate use of biological resources.

"Our biodiversity is key to human survival and sustainable development. Peru is one of the major world centers of origin and diversification of species of importance for food and the global economy," it added.

The government department also commented that the convention on biological diversity, of which Peru is part, has chosen the theme 'Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth' for this year with a view to accomplishing the commitments to be adopted at COP15, which will be held in October 2022, in China.
